August 12, 2008 - Dottie Jean McKinney Hodson:

Dottie Jean Hodson Of Bothell, WA, was 72 when she passed at Overlake Hospital on Friday, July 4th, 2008 from a series of strokes. Dottie was born on March 8, 1936, in Traer, Iowa, and moved with her family, as a young teen, to Seattle in 1949. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953. Married and divorced, at a young age with her two small children, Cindy and Steve. She worked at Prim Laundry full time, raising the two children by herself until she met her real love, Gayle Hodson, in 1963. After several years, they had their only son, Don. Always by Gayle's side, she was part of the race scene for over 40 years: go-kart racing in the Sears parking lot in the 1960's, Foreign Car Racing at Evergreen Speedway, and off-road racing throughout the Northwest, Canada and the Southwest. She loved being part of and helping coordinate local off-road races with her husband, Gayle, like the Sunfair 300 in Yakima, Wa. in the 1970's. At camp outs or races, she was the one feeding the unprepared, watching the stray kids and offering encouragement. She rode dirt bikes, dune buggies and sand rails - but never on the streets - if you can believe that. Always full of energy and enthusiasm and loved, loved, loved everything about racing, Dottie was as comfortable camping in the desert race events as she was at home. Dottie was a fixture in Woodinville's Rosehill Auto Service for 25 years with Gayle. She was the first one to greet you and last one you would see - and she was there when you needed her. And she probably knew more about your car then you did! Dottie was always witty and her positive attitude was contagious. She always showed compassion and concern for everyone around her, and that playful spark was always at the ready. Dottie passed with her husband and children by her side, still joking around until she could no longer. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gayle, her son, Steve Calvo (Janit), daughter, Cindy Hestekind (Mark), grandchildren, Tori and Daylin and son, Don Hodson (Wendy), her mother, Vopal McKinney (Whidbey Island), brothers, Dale McKinney (Utah), Bill McKinney (Whidbey Island) and sister Jana McKinney (Poulsbo). At Dottie's request, there will be no services.

He moved to Seattle when he was fifteen years old. He went to Lincoln High School where he met his lifetime friend, Jim Hanson. Charles loved working on cars at his father's service station and was handy all of his life. He attended Seattle University and the University of Washington. While working at Swedish Hospital pursuing a medical career, his friends nicknamed him "Doc" and it stuck.

He was later employed at Boeing. It was here that he met the love of his life, Della and two other life long friends-Don and Loretta. Charles and Della were married on February 4,1956. After the birth of Chardell, Donald and David, they all moved from Seattle to Prosser, Washington. Once again, friendship found Doc and Della — and they enjoyed time spent with Virginia and Louie - a friendship that lasts today. Doc went to work at the Hanford Site as a research scientist. Among his many achievements, he designed a glass melter for the disposal of highly radioactive waste.

In the mid-1960's, his last two children - Cheryl and Charlie Jr. were born. Doc loved being a father! He and Delia were their children's greatest fans. They supported their kids in their many interests: drama productions, tennis matches, football games, FFA, wrestling, swim team and gymnastics. He took his family boating, snow-skiing and camping. He was a skillful and patient driving instructor-teaching all of his kids and Aunt Mickey to drive.

Later, Charles was employed at Columbia Crest Winery as a lab supervisor. He always had a love for wine and the wine making process. He retired in the mid-1990s.

Doc loved being a grandfather and witnessed the birth of two of his grandchildren. He enjoyed gambling, raising race horses, golfing, doing "fix-it" projects, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, hosting gatherings, growing flowers, traveling to Alaska and fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. We will always remember his cheese platters covered in toothpicks, his pumpkin pies and fudge at the holidays and his radiant smile.

Services and arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.

The Lincoln High Cless of 1953 is indebted to John for the role he played in getting our class reunions underway 30 years ago. When Gail Thomas Herzog decided to organize the Reunion Committee it was November 1977. She called the school to see if anyone else was interested and got John's name. She called John and said, "This is going to be a push to get it done for June 1978 - with Christmas coming". He said, "Not to worry, I'm Jewish!"

John had an insurance office in Bellevue and offered the office for the administrative details. The process began: stuffing envelopes, licking stamps and envelopes and seeking contributions to cover costs. It was an amazing operation, most of which he organized. Friendships were established between classmates, who barely knew each other at Lincoln, and are still going strong. Aging is a great common denominator. We have all gone through similar life experiences. Everyone worked together and a great 25-year reunion was the result. A photo with John and his wife, Barbara, and some of the other committee members may be viewed by clicking here.)
